“Eunuch, wait a moment,” Ye Muyu called out to Eunuch Ren, drawing near and whispering something to him.
Eunuch Ren’s eyes lit up, and after she finished speaking, his face beamed with a smile, “Good, let’s go, accompany me to the front hall.”
Soon, the two arrived at the archives storage of the county government.
The steward and sub-prefect, hearing that Eunuch Ren wanted to examine the county’s past records on flood management, both felt their hearts skip a beat, and while one sent for County Magistrate Sun, they pretended to cooperate in unlocking the door.
“Eunuch, the key… I didn’t bring the key…” the sub-prefect said with a face full of fear, looking at him, “This official will go fetch it immediately.”
“Wait,” Eunuch Ren spoke.
The sub-prefect subconsciously glanced at him, suddenly feeling a splash of water from behind, chilling him to the core.
“What’s the meaning of this?” Fuming, the sub-prefect glared at the servant boy kneeling at his feet, trembling with anger.
With a mournful face, the servant boy pleaded, “My lord, this servant… it was not intentional.”
“Eunuch, allow me to go change my clothes,” the sub-prefect knew it wasn’t the time to punish a servant, so he first begged forgiveness and, with Eunuch Ren’s permission, turned and hurried away.
With trepidation, the steward stood in place, having just noticed that it indeed had been the servant boy who accidentally stumbled and spilled water on the sub-prefect. It looked like County Magistrate Sun’s doing, to prevent Eunuch Ren from entering the archives storage alone, even going as far as to play tricks right before Eunuch Ren.
It was uncertain whether the other party had noticed or not.
Anxiously, the steward looked toward Eunuch Ren.
Seeing his expression unchanged,
he breathed a slight sigh of relief.
About half a quarter hour passed.
The guard came over and went straight to the archives storage, opening the door.
The steward was shocked, instinctively asking, “How… how did you get the key?”
With a grin, Eunuch Ren explained, “Seeing the sub-prefect busy changing his clothes, I asked the guard to fetch it directly, which also saved us some effort.”
The steward looked at him in horror.
His previous assumption was slapped right in the face; the person who orchestrated the water spilling was likely not someone arranged by County Magistrate Sun.
It was Eunuch Ren!
No wonder he wasn’t the slightest bit angry when the sub-prefect left.
It played right into his plot, allowing him to get the key himself without others having any reason to stop him.
Trying to hide his shock, the steward missed the cold smirk on Eunuch Ren’s face as he turned his head back.
“Stay at the entrance.”
Eunuch Ren ordered three guards to stand guard outside.
He then entered with Ye Muyu.
With his heart pounding, the steward stepped in, pondering whether it would be the end for them if Eunuch Ren and his party actually discovered something suspicious in the account books. But thinking of those carefully arranged account books and records that wouldn’t allow for any incriminating evidence, he felt a bit more at ease.
Still, feeling guilty, he walked in somewhat dazed.
Eunuch Ren indeed headed straight for the wooden shelves where the records of flood control were kept.
The room was cluttered with various records, and when Eunuch Ren had to spend even more time locating other volumes after reviewing one, he found it quite vexing.
He had to read patiently, knowing such opportunities were rare, and once County Magistrate Sun reacted, he would surely find all sorts of excuses to hinder him.
Moreover, County Magistrate Sun didn’t seem as straightforward as he appeared.
After entering, Ye Muyu also noticed the messy and numerous records in the room. Just organizing these documents would likely take a long time.
Let alone reviewing each one and finding County Magistrate Sun’s incriminating evidence within them.
No wonder County Magistrate Sun hadn’t sent anyone to stop them yet.
What do you think?
